Hi all, we have unfortunately just noticed our box tree ball/hedge (Buxus) in front of our house at number 1 has been destroyed by box tree caterpillars. As we’re shielding and have not left the house for some time we hadn’t noticed until it was too late.
The moths are an invasive species that have only been in the country around a decade and only target Buxus. I would urge you to check any bushes you know or think to be Buxus for caterpillars, webbing or damage and treat accordingly if you find any as it can be very difficult to save the plant once damaged.
I have found a post on Nextdoor from a couple of weeks ago reporting them in the area. If you do find them please report them on the Royal Horticultural Society site https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=760
